FLAME (1978)
"We don't want to set the world on fire..... We just want to start a 'Flame', in your heart........" That was the opening intro from our stage show. A band that had a lot of potential in the 'comedy showband ' circuit. I have no pictures of this short lived line-up, some did exist and hopefully if and when I find something I will add it to this page. The band was an attempt to put together a slick, top class comedy-harmony-music act, inspired by The Rockin' Berries and The Barron Knights. A very hard thing to do! Front comedy man was Mick (Grump) Grant, I was lead guitar/vocals, Barry Morgan (ex Variations) was bassist/keyboards/vocals, on rhythm guitar/keyboards/vocals was Gary Cooper (ex Apley Rise/Satans) and 'drum man' was a guy from Ashford, Dave Spratt. Out front on the mixer in charge of sound, Billy Higgins. We featured a 'cabaret' type act consisting of popular cover songs (ie. ELO / Four Seasons), mixed between these were several fixed comedy routines with 'Grump'. We did two one hour sets and went down well. Our opening night in front of friends and family was at Littlebourne village hall, a few miles from Canterbury. The problem with comedy we found was that you couldn't book return work very often unless you changed your whole comedy act, on which we had worked long and hard to get right. -We really needed to work further afield. We played a few bookings and we had fun, but unfortunately there were personality problems, which caused tension and friction within the band and unfortunately it soon led to a split-up. However, I still look back upon the band with some happy memories..... |
